In an industry already known for demanding work with uncompromising timelines, the magnitude of the expectations on medical writers has only increased in the face of a global pandemic. As medical writing managers, we are increasingly faced with the challenges of talent recruitment and retention, the need to develop team members while requiring excellence and productivity from them, and the ever-present threat of burnout. This workshop will tackle these challenges by providing medical writing managers with the skills and vocabulary needed to enable them to manage down (as they develop their team members using a competency-based strategy) and to manage up (as they approach upper management to advocate for their teams).

Learning Objectives

Explain and apply available industry-created models to support medical writers at various professional levels and help them develop within their current role and beyond; Discuss and role-play strategies for articulating concerns, identifying champions, and engaging upper-level management in advocacy conversations.
